Frequently
Asked Questions: Nuclear

Why do we not build more nuclear plants to diversify our grid?

Part of the reason that you do not see more nuclear plants being built is because the cost to build them is so high. Currently the cost to construct a nuclear plant falls above 25 billion dollars and can take many years to complete. Another pitfall of nuclear plants is very strict requirements that hinder the ability to construct and operate plants.

What is a small modular reactor?

Small modular reactors (SMRs) are nuclear fission reactors that are smaller than conventional reactors. The term “small” in the context of SMRs refers to design power output. As per the International Atomic Energy Association (IAEA) classification, small modular reactors are defined as reactors that produce a power output of less than or equal to 300 MWe.

Is nuclear energy safe?

Despite common misconceptions, nuclear power plants are safe. As technology has advanced the ability to harness nuclear power free from incident has improved greatly. When looking at Small Modular Reactors a meltdown is impossible due to the low energy output. To read more about the safety of nuclear power follow the link below.

What happens to the waste from nuclear plants?

Spent reactor fuel assemblies are highly radioactive and, initially, must be stored in specially designed pools of water. The water cools the fuel and acts as a radiation shield. Spent reactor fuel assemblies can also be stored in specially designed dry storage containers. An increasing number of reactor operators now store their older spent fuel in dry storage facilities using special outdoor concrete or steel containers with air cooling. The United States does not currently have a permanent disposal facility for high-level nuclear waste.

Is there a future for nuclear power in America?

Due to high costs and long production times nuclear energy does not seem to be making a resurgence in the United States in the medium term. However, the possibilities of nuclear energy are clear. To create an energy independent nation nuclear power could serve and important role. But, there must be changes beforehand.
