Frequently
Asked Questions: Battery Storage

What is battery storage used for?

Battery storage is typically used as a way to store energy produced by renewable energy sources. In many cases the energy that is stored is being produced by wind or solar farms, but can also be used on a smaller scale. The energy that is stored is put onto the power grid during peak times.

Can the batteries catch on fire?

Any form of electrical generation has the potential to be a fire hazard. Battery storage facilities are no exception. However, the overall fire risk of a battery storage facility is often inflated. As the development of battery storage has grown so have safety standards and mitigation tactics.

Do battery storage facilities make noise? Are they visible?

Batteries alone do not make any noise. Unlike other power infrastructure or generation facilities, energy storage systems have very low noise profiles, with fans, HVAC systems, and transformers producing sounds at similar levels to standard commercial buildings. Battery energy storage systems may or may not be visible from a facility’s property line. Grid batteries can be housed in a variety of enclosures or buildings, none of which are taller than a house. Energy storage facilities are often unmanned and do not need light to function. Although some may have lighting for security purposes, this would be consistent with normal street lighting.

How much space does a battery storage facility take up?

Battery storage facilities usually take up much less land than a solar or wind farm. On average they can range from being built on 2-15 acres of land. But, depending on the needs of the facility larger ones have been constructed. A recent project that passed near Dayton will take up 7 acres of a 19 acre lot.

Are the batteries recyclable?

Yes, the batteries that would be used for a storage facility can be recycled. In addition to the ability to be recycled they can also be reused. You can look into the process of battery selection and a process for how they are reused and recycled below.
